I told the grade 11’s (TEJ3M) that we would be continuing our work with the breadboard trainers again today. The students should now be working on the 555 timer assignment listed below. Once the students complete the 555 timer activity, I would like them to connect the 7 segment display to their breadboard (looks like a number 8). If there are any students that finish absolutely everything listed above, then they can start working with the arduino board. The students are to click on the document below titled “MEGA2560 Starter Kit Tutorial” and then do “Chapter 3 Blink LED”, “Chapter 4 PWM”, “Chapter 5 Advertising LED”, “Chapter 6 Traffic Light” & “Chapter 7 Buzzer”.
I began by talking to the grade 12’s (TEJ4M) about their third and final task in the lego unit which is “battlebots”. I showed the students the guidelines for this task and told them we would be making some modifications. The first modification is that the battle arena will be a 1m by 1m square instead of a 1m in diameter circle. The second modification is that the students will have to make 5 different programs so that their robots can battle in the arena autonomously (the students cannot control their robot using a remote). After talking to the grade 12’s (TEJ4M), I then asked them to complete the second task which is an obstacle course similar to the one they had to do last year for their final project (see picture of obstacle course below).
Below you will find a copies of the handouts/worksheets that were distributed/assigned in today’s class.
Grade 11 (TEJ3M):
May 13 – 555 Timer Assignment (Once the students have completed all of the assignments listed above, then they can work on this assignment.)
Steps to create a blinking LED with a 555 timer (This resource will help the students with the 555 timer assignment listed above.)
Student example from this year of 555 timer activity (I took a screenshot of one of the grade 12’s that did this activity earlier this year.)
May 16 – 7 Segment LED Configuration (The students can go to this link to help them connect their 7 segment LED to their breadboard. I will take a picture once they have completed this.)
Student example from this year of 7 segment display (I took a screenshot of one of the grade 12’s that did this activity earlier this year.)
Arduino Resources for TEJ3M:
MEGA2560 Starter Kit Tutorial (this document contains the tutorials the students will be working on with the arduino board)
http://arduino.cc/en/main/software (this is the link to the site where you can download the arduino software)
May 16 – Arduinio Blinking Light (Chapter 3) Picture Example (I showed this to the students in class to help them set up their arduino board with the laptop and breadboard trainer)
Grade 12 (TEJ4M):
Various NXT step by step builds (There are various step by step instructions for building all kinds of different nxt robots.)
Lego NXT robots using NXC tutorial – Part 1 (Tutorial 1 for the nxc programming language.)
Lego NXT robots using NXC tutorial – Part 2 (Tutorial 2 for the nxc programming language.)
Lego NXT robots using NXC tutorial – Part 3 (Tutorial 1 for the nxc programming language.)
Second Track Using all 3 sensors (The students are to create a robot using all 3 sensors and will then program it to go through this course. The students can use this same robot for “Battle-bots”.)
May 19 – Lego Mindstorm Robot Wars Rules (Students are to read over these rules so they know the expectations for “battlebots”. I told the students we would have a 1m by 1m square arena instead of a 1m in diameter circular arena.)
Lego Sumo Challenge (2012) (This is a YouTube video of a robot challenge from 2012 that the students can watch related to the third and final task “battlebots”.)
Battle Bot Arena (This is a picture of the arena I made for the students in class for “battlebots”.)
